Author Guidelines

I. General Provisions

The journal Plant Biotechnology and Breeding accepts for publication original research results, review articles, protocols and methods in the field of applied crop biotechnology as well as works on conventional breeding of food, forage, industrial and other crops combined with in vitro technologies and methods of genomic and marker-oriented breeding, genome editing, distant hybridization, cell and chromosome engineering.

The journal is published four times a year. The languages of publications are Russian and English. Publications in the journal are free of charge. Color illustrations are welcome in an article. Any article may be supplemented with additional electronic format materials.

The complete text of a manuscript and illustrations are submitted in electronic format (https://biosel.elpub.ru).

Manuscripts are to be sent along with the information about the author(s): family name, first name and patronymic, place and address of employment, position, contact telephone number, e-mail address, and ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID). A contact person should also be identified for the editors to communicate and correspond with. By submitting a manuscript to the journal Plant Biotechnology and Breeding, the author(s) automatically acknowledge(s) the fact that their manuscript is not considered for publication nor being preprinted in any other journal or elsewhere. The editors examine all submitted manuscripts for plagiarism via the antiplagiat.ru online system. Any use of images, pictures, photos, tables, graphs, diagrams or other forms of graphic data presentation, earlier included in any scientific or non-scientific publications, without prior consent of their copyright holder(s) is regarded as plagiarism.

Acceptable for publication in Plant Biotechnology and Breeding are peer-reviewed articles. Decision on publication is taken by the Editorial Board of the journal on the basis of peer reviews made by two experts. A manuscript that received negative reviews from two independent reviewers will be rejected by the Editorial Board’s decision. In the case of two conflicting reviews (negative versus positive), the editors will engage a third reviewer. If a manuscript needs amending, it is returned to the author(s) together with the remarks of the reviewer(s). Amendments made by the author(s) in the manuscript need to be incorporated into the electronic version of the text received from the editors and returned to the editors within the prescribed period of time. The amended article is once again considered by the Editorial Board, who will decide on the possibility of its publication.

The editors request the authors to follow the guidelines set below while preparing and sending manuscripts to the journal. The manuscripts formatted without observance of these guidelines will not be considered by the Editorial Board. The author(s) will be informed by e-mail on the decision taken.

II. Size of a Manuscript

The size of an overviewing, problem-oriented or analytical article should not exceed 20 pages of computerized text including the components listed below, while descriptions of experiments should be limited to no more than 15 computerized pages. This volume includes: an abstract (in Russian and in English), key words (in Russian and in English), the main text, a list of references, tables and/or illustrations, and their captions (in Russian and in English). Articles exceeding these volumes may be accepted by the Editorial Board’s decision. The text should be typeset using the Word for Windows text editor using Times New Roman font, with font size 14pt, with fully justified alignment, without hyphenation and without first-line indentation. Single interline spacing should be used. All margins are 2 cm wide. Page size is А4.

When original experimental data are presented, it is advisable to use the following subtitles:

Introduction

Materials and methods

Results

Discussion

Conclusion or Findings

Theoretical, overviewing and problem-oriented articles may have optional structure but must contain an abstract, key words, and a list of references.

Format Requirements for the Abstract

The abstract should be detailed enough. Main results, conclusions, methods and objectives should be presented in a clear and explicit manner. Phraseology like “…the issues considered in the article are…” or “…the problem discussed is…” is not recommended.

Articles presenting experimental data require clear representation of the sections Background, Results, Conclusion and, if needed (prior to the results), Objectives and Materials and methods

For surveys, dividing the text into separate sections is not required.

Format Requirements for the Text

The Introduction needs to present an explicit definition of the scope of issues considered it the publication, brief description of the essence of the problem studied, and justification of the research’s relevance. In the end of the Introduction, the objective of the research is posed.

The section Materials and methods should contain the list and characteristics of the materials used  as well as consecutive enumeration of all the methods employed. For commonly used methods, it is enough to provide references to the data sources. For less popular methods, it is necessary to describe their essence and/or specific features of the modifications applied. New, rare and unique methods should be described in sufficient detail to enable other research teams to reproduce them. If the research required using any instruments, the choice of which could influence the results of the work, or any new and unique devices, the manuscript should contain their brand names and, in parentheses, the name(s) of their producer(s) and the country of origin.

The data obtained are consistently and in detail accounted for in the section Results. In the articles on experiments, reliability of results should be confirmed using statistical methods. The publication should contain information on the size of the studied sample, the criteria used, and the level of significance of the data obtained. It is important to choose the easiest and most understandable manner of their presentation to the reader (text, graphics or tables).

The section Discussion provides interpretation of the results obtained and compares them with the data produced by other authors, while in the Conclusion the prospects of using these results or further development of the work are discussed.

The names of the sections are to be typed in lowercase characters (boldface; 14pt) in a separate line, centered, and separated from the previous and following paragraphs by one blank line.

The authors of the taxa appear in the text only when first mentioned. The name of any taxon, when it appears in the abstract, table titles or figure captions, must include the author(s).

Gene names and symbols are italicized, while the names of their products are presented in roman type. For example: genes Vrn1, af, det, sym; proteins hsp 70, ATM, etc. Phage and virus names should appear in regular roman type.

Molecular size (length) of DNA fragments (nucleotide base pairs) should be designated without dots, starting with a lowercase letter (bp).

To indicate multiplication and crossing, the × symbol is used.

All values should be expressed in the units of measurement approved by the National Standards (GOST) or the International System of Units (SI). Decimal fractions are separated with a comma when appearing in the Russian text, and with a dot in the English one.

Self-citations must not exceed 25%.

Abstracts, conference proceedings, and non-deposited dissertation papers are not cited. References to dissertations, conference proceedings, patents and legal and legal instruments are allowed only if they are freely accessible via web browsers.

When citations are included in the text, the author, year and page are to be indicated (Author, 2014,  p.°67). When a table or a figure is cited, it should be marked: (from A.°A.°Author, year).

References within the text are given in parentheses in English. An author’s last name without initials is followed by a comma and the year of publication, for example: (Radchenko, 2017). If there are two coauthors, both last names are cited, for example: (Antonova, Khlestkina, 2019). If there are three coauthors or more, only the first one is named, with ‘et al.’ after his/her last name: (Anisimova et°al., 2019). If there is a need to refer to several sources, the references in the text are arranged in chronological order, for example: “In a number of publications (Gavrilenko, 2007; Shvachko, Gavrilenko, 2011; Antonova et al., 2018)…” References to several publications of the same author (or the same group of authors) published in the same year are formatted by adding Latin lowercase letters after the year in alphabetical order, for example: (Burlyaeva et°al., 2014; Vishnyakova, 2018a; 2018b; 2018d; Novikova et°al., 2019а; 2019b;). The sequence of such letters must comply with the positions of the publications in the section References.

Format Requirements for the References

The section References should contain bibliographic records for all publications referred to in the text of the article. The list of references is to be formatted in compliance with the journal’s standards (see below).

The references in the list should be arranged in alphabetical order according to the latinized family names of the first authors.

All the coauthors of a published source must be mentioned in the corresponding reference to it. Article titles and names of domestic or foreign journals must not be abbreviated.

If a source cited in the article has a digital object identifier (DOI), it should appear immediately after the source.

If an article’s language is based on the Latin alphabet (English, German, Finnish, Danish, Italian, etc.), such article is to be cited in its original version, with the indication in English of the original language at the end of the reference in brackets (e. g. [in French]). For the languages employing other fonts (Greek, Chinese, Arabic, etc.), only the English version of the reference is presented, with the indication of the original language in brackets at the end of the reference (e. g. [in Japanese]). For example:

Oosterveld E. Lepelbladveenmos (Sphagnum platyphyllum (Braithw.) Warnst.) na 50 jaar terug in Nederland. Gorteria. 2011;35(5):181-187. [in Dutch]

Shigemune A., Yoshida T. Methods of anther culture of pearl millet and ploidy level of regenerated plants. Japanese Journal of Crop Science. 2000;69(2):224-228. [in Chinese]

If an article has an already published English translation of its title, etc., but its text has been published in non-Latin characters (Russian, other cyrillic fonts, etc.), the original non-latinized reference is given in parenthesis after the English (or latinized) version of the reference to a source. The availability of a published English translation of an article’s title may be checked at e.Library.ru. For example:

Anisimova I.N., Karabitsina Y.I., Alpatieva N.V., Kuznetsova E.B., Gavrilova V.A., Radchenko E.E. Polymorphic variants of sunflower RFL-PPR genes as molecular genetic markers. Proceedings of Applied Botany, Genetics and Breeding. 2017;178(3):82-90. [in Russian] (Анисимова И.Н., Карабицина Ю.И., Алпатьева Н.В., Кузнецова Е.Б., Гаврилова В.А., Радченко Е.Е. Полиморные варианты RFL-PPR-генов подсолнечника как молекулярно-генетические маркеры. Труды по прикладной ботанике, генетике и селекции. 2017;178(3):82-90). DOI: 10.30901/2227-8834-2017-3-82-90

For publications that do not have English (German or French) titles and summaries, it is necessary to present a translation of the publication’s title into English, transliterated title of the publication, transliterated title of the journal, translation of the journal’s title, and imprint data in due order – year;volume(issue, etc.):pages separated by a hyphen. A reference to the publication’s original language should be given in brackets: [in Russian], followed by the full cyrillic reference in the original publication’s language in parentheses. For example:

Bobrov E.G. Bicentennial of physical expeditions of the Academy of Sciences (Dvukhsotletiye fizicheskikh ekspeditsiy Akademii nauk). Botanicheskii zhurnal = Botanical journal. 1968;53(11):1647-1649. [in Russian] (Бобров Е.Г. Двухсотлетие физических экспедиций Академии наук. Ботанический журнал. 1968;53(11):1647-1649).

Information on correct reference formatting is presented in more detail in the appendix to the present rules.

Format Requirements for Tables and Figures

Tables are to be placed within the main text of an article.

Tables are formatted using MSWord processing instruments in the TABLES section. For the heading of a table (Table°3. Title of the table), the 14pt boldface font is used (centered). The title is separated from the table by a blank line. If a figure or a table is cited from another source, its author(s) should be referred to: (from A.°A.°Author, 2000). If more than one table is used, they should have consecutive numbers. Each table and every row and column inside it should have titles. Abbreviations (except conventional ones) are not permitted in tables. The contents of the tables should not duplicate the text. Tables should not contain columns or rows with the same values in all cells. If no data are available, a dash is used.

All titles of columns and rows should appear in two languages – Russian and English. Recommended font size for tables is 12pt, and no less than 10pt in case of high density of the text. All abbreviations and acronyms should be expanded in the footnotes to the table. Vertical and horizontal lines are mandatory for a table, except for the left and right boundaries. If a table does not fit within one page, its heading should be reproduced on each page of the table.

Reference to a table in the text should be: Table°3 or (Table 3). If the same table is mentioned more than once, (see Table 3) is used. If the article contains only one table, the same rule is applied but without any number: Table or (Table).

Таблица 3. Название таблицы

Table 3. Table title

Figures (including charts, graphs and diagrams) should be incorporated into the main text and additionally represented by files (.jpeg, .tiff; .xls, .xlsx) attached to the publication. All figures should be numbered. The caption begins with “Fig.°2.” followed by a full stop and the text of the caption (centered; 14pt). A figure is referred to in the text as Fig. °2.; a fragment of a figure as Fig.°2a. If only one figure is used, no number is required, and the word “Figure” is not abbreviated. Illustrations may be multicolored (for an online version), but should have copies – with shades of grey, black-and-white, or monochrome (for a printed version). The captions should be presented in the Russian and English languages.

Рис. 1. Название рисунка

Fig. 1. Figure caption

Scanned pictures should have resolution no less than 300 dpi or, if the picture is tiny, 600 dpi, and saved in the .jpeg or .tiff format. Font size in captions is 12pt.
